English courses
English courses offered at the Language Institute are aimed at (1) students of English (British and American literature and/or linguistics), ie students for whom English as a foreign language forms an integral part of their degree, and (2) students of subjects other than English.
1. Students of English
All courses for students of English presuppose that students will have taken English at German Abitur level (~B2) or equivalent. Students whose mother tongue is not German should note that some courses also require a comparable, if not higher, level of German.
Lower-level language courses include communication skills, reading, writing, translation, as well as other areas such as vocabulary and grammar. Higher-level language courses include oral skills, writing, translation, and contrastive language skills. In addition to language courses, the English section also offers a wide range of area-studies courses.
Course registration and ECTS credits: Registration for all courses takes place during the 1st meeting of class. Please refer to the University's central enrolment portal (ZEuS: Fächerübergreifendes Angebot > Sprachkurse) for full course descriptions, including information about course requirements, and note that all courses carry 3 ECTS credits.
2. Students of other subjects
Courses for students of subjects other than English come under either General English or English for Special Purposes (ESP).
General English: These courses range from refresher courses to advanced integrated skills, as well as preparatory courses for students wishing to sit external examinations such as Cambridge Advanced (CAE).
English for Special Purposes (ESP): These courses include English for Economists and Administrators; Students of Political Sciences, Social Sciences, International Relations, Sociology & History; Lawyers, and Natural Scientists.
Course registration and ECTS credits: Registration for these courses takes place EITHER online before the start of term OR offline during the 1st meeting of class. Please refer to the University's central enrolment portal (ZEuS: Fächerübergreifendes Angebot > Sprachkurse) for full course descriptions, including details about registration and course requirements, and note that all these courses carry 3 or 6 ECTS credits depending on whether there are 2 or 4 contact hours a week.
